Does this product actually do anything? It doesn't seem to work.

I've had this product installed on two different
machines. It seems to be fully functional BUT it doesn't
STOP anything.

Twice now, I've had msyelf and my wife make a typo on a
URL only to be taken to a site that does nothing more
than provide a boat load of spyware. The MS AntiSpyware
package comes up and politely asks do you want to allow
or now or block or whatever and you say No or Deny or
Block. Guess what, when I'm done, they are all
installed. This has never worked once at preventing
anything. On top of that, if you clean your system with
it, the things it says are cleaned up are back when you
are all done.

What is the point? Am I missing something?

To effectively use the "BETA 1" release of Microsoft AntiSpyware, please
restart in safe mode and do a full system scan. Open Microsoft AntiSpyware
"BETA 1", on the scan page choose Scan Options > full system scan > (check
boxes below) > click "Run Scan Now".

Restart in safe mode instructions:

Also, since it is well known that Microsoft AntiSpyware is still "BETA" it
is recommended you use alternative AntiSpyware utilities in conjunction with
Microsoft AntiSpyware. Also, please send suspected Spyware reports from the
Tools menu in Microsoft AntiSpyware when you detect something.

FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm

I personally accept the Beta nature of the MS program so
would fully expect something not to work right,
neverthless I have not had it fail to remove something it
said it had removed, nor fail to block something I had
disallowed. I do think it fails sometimes to alert me when
I think it should, but then find it gets around to it
eventually. A little tweaking needed there I'd reckon. I
agree that something that needs to be removed should be
attempted in Safe Mode since some spywares and malwares
are always running in the background, and their files
won't delete unless they are out of memory and not
running. Or something like that.

Hi ATD,

First, how is your machine? Firewall on? SP2 installed? Current, up to date
AntiVirus? What version of Sun Java are you running, and how many prior
versions are on your machine?

Following the above can lead to a much safer surfing experience.

If you hit one of the sites I am thinking of, your machine gets deluged with
an older vuln from Java 1.4.2_03.

I would also suggest that you boot from Safe Mode (F8 at startup) and do a
full scan from there.
