I am pretty sure that this is the printer that suits our printer needs
for school projects.
It is hard to tell from the pictures if you can do things like scan a
page in a text book.

Anyone unhappy with this printer?

It sure can, see http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1765723,00.asp

Sorry no direct experience with this model but I do with the printer engine
which is very good (ip4000) and there is nothing wrong with Canon scanner
technology so I would expect it to be a competent Canon product.
If you don't need FAX you may consider the cheaper MP750 which uses the same
printer engine.

I have had this multifunction printer for 8-9 months and it has worked
very well. The scanner functions as an automatic sheet feed and a flat
bed. The scanner software allows multi page sheet fed scans to be saved
as a single pdf file which is very convenient. It also does double page
booklet scanning and with the sheet feed it will scan legal size pages.

I have the MP750 which is the exact same model as the 780 with the
omission of a fax.

In terms of scanning it has both the document feeder type (only one
side at a time) and the flat bed scanner. The lid for the flat bed
part has vertically sliding hinge points so it can accomodate books of
about 2 inches or less in thickness.

I'd highly recommend the printer unit as well and one thing that this
thing does very well is handle photocopying functionality at the
fastest rate of any of the inkjet models out there. Booklet printing
is something I've grown to love too :)

The only thing I could add really is that you should spend a week
playing with the different functions and read the manual to see what
features it supports... the list is pretty long and very useful :)

Hope that helps..

Canon has discontinued the 750, so the few places that have any seem to
have jacked up the price. Outpost.com had them for 99 bucks (plus there
was a 50 dollar rebate I could qualify for), but when I went to order,
they were already out. (Lesson learned...buy when you see it and don't
piddle around)

I finally gave up and bought the 780 for 200 shipped from Office Max,
but haven't yet unpacked it. LOL. (Thanksgiving, etc.)

It's BIG.
