Does the 5100 really need 10.4.8?

Now that my mother's 3rd printer in 10 years has bit the dust (Epson
880, and she only drove it on Sundays : ) ), I'm considering
letting her be the guinea pig before I get a 5300 for myself. But I'm
wondering if anyone has ignored the OSX system requirement and managed
to fire it up on 10.3.9? Her 500mhz iMac is holding on nicely in
context, but I have a feeling upping it to 10.4.8 will make for more
hassles than it's worth.

I am so sick of how much ink costs what with two school kids printing
out colorful reports every month, even with getting generic refills or
waiting for net specials. I don't even care if the photo quality's
not great. If text is good I can do critical printing elsewhere, and
Grandma certainly won't be taking a magnifying glass to it.

Thanks.

I have a 5100 Kodak on a PC and it prints just fine. I have not tried
photos yet.

Thanks

Greetings R,

Well not sure what might happen, but I suspect some of it may work.
Our testing, however, reveals that you do indeed need that latter. So,
if your Moms system can take the update, it would be worth it for her.
The printer will do an exceptional job for her at a reduced price.

Thanks, Ron. I almost solved the issue by getting it anyway and just
telling her to transfer files to print via memory cards or USB
drives. Upgrading someone's system in this case is the kind of thing
that's easy for us (if it's possible and worth it) but hard on the
user due to they're having to once again get used to some things
working differently.

But I'm a little concerned about the sluggish performance that some
people have found in it reading the directory of the card. I have
no idea if this is an anomaly. Is there anything about this strategy
that needs to be addressed? For example, do the cards and drives
have to be Windows formatted?

Hi RBoy,

Glad to help.

I am not aware of anything unusual about the reader in the printer, and I
believe it will take any formatting including FAT or FAT32. I have not tried
that but will see if I can gather more information. I suggest formatting a
card as FAT and seeing how it performs. Try the same formatting in FAT32 and
see how that performs. If it is a big card, copy whatever you have on the
card to your HD then format and add the images you want to print. See if
making sure the card is clear of any other data makes a difference. If I can
get access I will try the same things for you.
