I am looking for a freeware app that will list the largest files on a hard
drive. I have found a program that does what I want except it only lists the
top 20 (I would prefer something like top 100). Here is what I am referring
to:

http://www.broccolisoftware.com/products/FreewareTools/DataVolume.asp

It claims to be Freeware but when I check the registry it lists an expiry
date. On the plus side there is no installer and it's small.

PS for Windows 98SE

I take back the expiry date. It was a similar program that I was looking at

You can't get what you want from a standard Windows file search performed
across all drives? You can sort on filesize descending easily enough.

There is a maximum number it will display, no idea how many. Fewer than I
have at least...

You should be able to use file comparison programs. Just comapre your HD to
some folder, unimpoirtant which. The HD side will show all files and let
you sort by size. I use WMatch from ZiffDavis, used to be free, no longer
is.

Can't you just Control-F (or Windows Key-F), do a search for *.* and
then click on the size column label?

That was my first thought. Windows file search complains about 'too many
files' and to refine my search:-(

PS we're talking Windows 98SE. It appears to work in Windows XP but is
very slow.

You might try Directory Hog

If it says "refine your search" then have you considered "refining
your search" ?

Start - Find - Files or Folders - Advanced - Size is at least 4,000
KB.

If you still get "too many files" then increase the 4,000 figure. If
the results are less than 100 then decrease the 4,000 figure.

You can sort the results in "size" order.

Regards, John.

dir c:\ /s /a /o-s > c:\windows\temp\bysize.txt

will list all files, sorted by size (largest first),
to c:\windows\temp\bysize.txt

Thanks. I have used Advanced but usually to search for files containing
text. I didn't realize it has an option for size. I will give this a try.

I actually tried this but it wouldn't work on my machine. Apparently it
doesn't just want Java but Sun Java. I have MS Java and wasn't about to
install Sun Java as well.
LOL - you crack me up :)

No need for any new software. See this old message:

Subject: Re: Anything to find the biggest files on a HD?
Newsgroups: alt.comp.freeware

I'm looking for a program that will search the hard drive of my
Win98-using computer and report back on which files are the biggest
and where they are located. Even if they're "hidden" files. Somewhere
I've lost a couple of gigs and I want it back! :)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Enter the following at a DOS prompt (a DOS windows's best because it
will show
you the long filenames}:

DIR C:\ /A /S /L /-P | SORT /R /+16 > C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\DIR.TXT
EXIT

Your information will be in Dir.txt on the desktop. You'll have to
scroll down
past the folder information to get to the files.
