Does Outlook need to be open to remind you of something?

I have Outlook 2002 and was just wondering whether the program would need to
be open for it to remind you of an appointment or a birthday, for
example...Is there a way for it to remind you of an appointment if the
program isn't in use?

TIA,
David

No, just like you can't read a Word document if Word is not open.

Indeed, but it would be nice if Outlook ran a small program as a service
to monitor the reminders when Outlook itself wasn't on duty.

For reminders I use Digital Postit Notes by 3M. By default it starts
itself when you logon, and mostly sits in the System Tray until if has
something to remind you about.

Anytime some outside program accesses outlook data you risk problems - from
outlook not shutting down completely to the other app corrupting data. You
can run outlook 2002 and newer in the tray - it uses just a small amt of
resources, not much more than a reminder app would.
