does IE need any settings to detect how the connect to the Internet?

Usually when I expect a network to work id does not.
Now I have a case when it works, thought I expected it not to.

I had two w2k on a Workgroup connected via Vigour2600x ADSL router, which in
turn is connected to Internet via Bradband.

I added the third w2k. All I did on the new w2k was setting TCP/IP
properties to obtain IP and DNS server addresses automatically.

To my surprise IE5.50 on that computer already knows how to connect to the
Internet without me doing any settings on it.
Even in Tools-Connections-LAN Settings nothing is checked or filled in.

How it works?

That is how it is supposed to work! You got the network settings correct and
you can connect.

Which bit is responsibble for that?
Is it Default Gateway whis address is assigned automatically (by the router
I assume)?

Both a valid Default Gateway and a Internet DNS server are required for IE
Internet connectivity unless you have a proxy server.
