does AVG actually work

my legit copy of norton 2003 (expired) messed up i am now using AVG free
7.totally up to date


i went to the very old cracks website

cracks.am

because i know there is a virus on one of the pages there, whenever u try to
download anything an exploit virus or something was previously blocked by
norton AV 2003

nothing so much as a whisper from AVG when i visisted the same page

now does this mean that AVG doesn't automatically detect viruses in web
pages and block them and show a message to the user

i am using IE6 i do occasionally use Opera

I just want to know that AVG free can keep most viruses that are out there
off my system

both when i browse the web and read e mail

so far the e mail protection thing refused to connect to my pop3 server but
i entered it into the list and it works ok now, but this does protect me
from internet files

i refuse to buy AV as soon as it is bought its out of date and now norton
only allow subscription for a year and updates for a year it leaves users
relying on the companies and needing to keep paying them

any other free AV progs that would do what i ask above about browsing the
web and reading e mail as well as having a constantly on scanning protecting
me from possible infected files

any help greatly appreciated

Well, there are several possibilities...

One, what Norton detected really wasn't a virus, but a "false positive"
instead.

Two, whatever might have been there before is now gone.

Three, AVG missed it.

AVG is a good AV. I've used it for a long time with no complaints. It has
caught many a nasty.

Like any other virus scanner, you need to ensure that it is updated, but
most importantly, you need to ensure that WINDOWS is updated regularly.
Additionally, behavior modification on your part will go a long way to
preventing infections. Loosely put, if you go to sites you know have
viruses etc. dont be surprised when you get infected.

I am asking for any suggestions or help finding a FREE anti virus program
that will protect my system all the time

Thank you, one thing i wasnt sure of was if AVG Free would pick up viruses
in web pages and display a message to the user, since i have never used it
am not familiar with its "ways" been on norton 2003 for a year and a bit,
first AV i ever bothered to use and it served well kept my system 100% clean
for the whole time i had it

recently it has been a bit buggy, so AVG is my new prog, hope it can perform
as well as Norton, i have tried AVAST but dont i need to register after 30
days?

anyhow thanks for the help with pointing out that AVG is reliable

AVG Free Edition works just fine for me, and has done for several
years. YMMV.

I've used AVG Free and Avast free, and up until AVG7 nothing could beat
AVG - it would find stuff that other, some commercially purchased, AV
software missed. It was easy and good, regularly updated signatures, and
best of all TOTALLY FREE!!!!

Now, AVG7 has changed a little, and I think isn't as easy to navigate as
AVG6, but now that the email scanner update has come out it seems to be
working fine again. Given the past success of AVG I'm happy to rely on it
again..

Avast is also good, but I really don't think the free version is as good as
AVG Free - Avast free doesn't let you schedule scans like AVG does (you need
Avast professional for the schedule function), and Avast isn't as easy to
navigate as AVG is, but it is a good program. Avast professional is very
good and comes very close to beating AVG, but given that AVG is totally free
it just doesn't compare!!!

As other have said, there are a number of reasons that AVG isn't alerting
you on that webpage, but it doesn't necessarily mean that AVG is at fault.
AVG will (should) alert you to any virus that tries to run or download, but
sometimes things will still get through (between updates for example). On
very rare occassions I have had AVG locate a virus on the hard drive and the
only way it could've gotten there is from the internet, but it was detected
straight after an update and that is a problem that all AV software will
suffer from.

So, I guess it will come down to personal choice - Avast is very good but
there are limits with the free version that AVG doesn't have, and I think
the scheduler is the big one! Avast free will scan the hard drive on boot
up, but when you try to schedule it to scan at a designated time it tells
you that you need the professional version, whereas AVG Free allows you to
set a schedule for updates and scanning. OTOH Avast seems to update
automatically as soon as there is an update available rather than only at
the scheduled time you specify.....
