Does anyone know what causes the icons on the links toolbar to change back

When I first game an address and drag it to the links
bar, I usually get a custom icon that the site's
developer must have added. At some future time (days and
several reboots past the addition of the link) then icon
suddenly is changed and is just the default IE "e" icon.
I have no idea why. I often "rename" the link to make it
shorter but the icon has survived over reboots after this
so I can't believe this is related.

Visually, the colorful custom icons on the links bar are
great and helpful. I just can see what's up. I want to
say I haven't seen this until V6 but that may not be
true. I have seen this on W2k and XP-Home machines. I
have W98SE and ME ones on V6 that also just magically
lose theirs too.
 
The favorites icons are deleted once the Temporary Internet Files are
cleared. This is by design.

The program "FavOrg" preserves the favorites icon permanently. You may
