A fix to run Alien v Predator gold edition on an xp machine. Game installs ok but when you go to run it a message appears saying there is not enough video memory to run in this resolution and thats in 600 16bit. I have renamed the exe file to AVPG as suggested elswhere but its still the same. All drivers are up to date and my card has 256 memory so there shouldnt be a prob there. Any help would be great.

Btw. Hi! to all as a newbie to this site.

In Lorna Doone Country, But up in London about to go on my hols later:D
Where are you then?

welcome to the site u8myufo

im the same as murdoch i cant help on the problem that you have but i am sure a gamer will see your thread soon and assist you :thumb:

sounds like your graphics card is not up to the job, what are your system specs ?

and hello
hello.gif

Ahh! i just posted this very same question in the thread 'Old games' i too am have problems play it on an Xp machine.
except i can get in game, but it is unplayable- i cant see a thing, even with gamma turned up (the game isnt supposed to be like this either)

and system specs?
7900GT
Asus A8N32-SLI
2 gigs ram
AMD 3500

so as u can see its not a hardware problem, or is it? :)

Lol Alf at least I aint on me own. My specs are as follows
Abit KV7 mobo
1gig DDr Ram
AMD Barton 2500
XFX Gforce 6600GT

Ok not a top spec machine but I think its another case of non compatible software for your PC, the combination of components for building a pc are so wide and varied nowadays that its no wonder we get a few probs from time to time.
Windows just another pain in the glass. I have sent a DX Diag report to Xplosive who said they would do all they can to try and resolve the issue, so they cannot be any fairer than that.

Oh btw way Murdoch im just outside Bath.

I couldn't get that game to run on XP, only on Win 98 and even then it was really dark, even with all gamma settings turned up and with Monitor on full brightness.

It actually refused to install on XP, saying the game was incompatible.

I did play it for awhile, turned the room lights off as well, lol, but the darkness made it a PITA.

Ah!! good old 98, you know that platform still has a shed load of advantages as far as stable gaming is concerned even playing it over the Lan.

hey Flops, for the most part thats how its supposed to be
but if flares dont work, then its Xp

All sorted

Well kind of cos after xplosive reading my dx diag report they suggested the following.
Knock the resolution and refresh right back on my monitor.
Install monitor driver, even though I said it aint got one and there aint one for it, its an lcd and its just plug and play.
Install graphics card driver (Version 3 frigging year old .000)

Forget it, the icons on me screen are so big I cant see the background

so i guess were both out of luck on playing?
darn, i was hoping i could find a fix, i really liked this game

Well Alf here is their instructions in full, I might drop back the driver and so long as it dont conflict with anything else leave it.

Aliens Versus Predator

Please try the following.

1. Uninstall the software. Ensure that the game folder Fox has been removed
from the installation path.

2. Set the desktop resolution to 1024 x 768

To change your screen resolution / colour settings

Open Display in Control Panel.
Windows XP = To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
click Display.
Windows ME = To open Display, click Start, click Settings, click Control
Panel, and then click Display.
On the Settings tab, under Display Properties, drag the screen area slider
to the required setting, and then click Apply.
A default setting of 1024 x 768 is a standard option to set this to.
Also ensure that your colour quality is set to either highest 32bit or true
colour 32 bit.
When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black
for a moment.
Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the
change. Click Yes to confirm the change; click No or do nothing to revert to
your previous setting.

3. Install the monitor driver.

Monitor driver

From Windows Desktop

Right Click on your desktop where there are no icons.
Left Click on Properties
Left Click on Settings
The Monitor make and model should be shown with the make and model of the
graphics card under the heading of display.
If it shows default or plug and play then you need to install the monitor
drivers.
The drivers are usually provided with the monitor or can be downloaded from
the manufacturers website.

4. Change the refresh rate to 60Hz

From Windows Desktop

Click on the Start button,
Click on the Run... icon,
Type 'dxdiag' and press either your Enter key or press 'OK',
The Direct X Diagnostic Tool will load up,
Click on the More Help tab at the top,
On this screen click on the Override button,
Now click on Override and enter a value of 60,
Press OK and then Exit and start the game.

5. Change the Graphics card driver to the following 66.93 using the link
below

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_66.93.html

6. Reinstall the software and change the avp file.

You need to locate the Alien Vs Predator game folder, which has a path
location of: -

"C:\Program Files\Fox\Aliens versus Predator\"

You now need to locate the file AVP.exe and rename it to AVPG.exe
(To rename the AVP.exe file, right click on file, left click on the rename
option)
When you have renamed the file you can return back to your desktop and
rename the short cut for Alien Vs Predator by right clicking on the Aliens
Vs predator desktop icon, left clicking on properties, left click on the
highlighted string in the target window and change the target from: -

"C:\Program Files\Fox\Aliens versus Predator\avp.exe"

to

"C:\Program Files\Fox\Aliens versus Predator\avpg.exe"

click on apply, click on ok.

The game will start from the Alien Vs Predator Short cut on the desktop.

Please try the game again.

Well to be honest Alf this will be the first time I have played it, we had it down the lan gaming centre where I used to work www.wireworld.co.uk and I did not get around to playing it then.
