Does anyone know of a program that will actually do the things WMM v.2, and previous versions, said they could do?

I copied a VHS tape to CD, and now want to edit the approx. 30 min. video into much smaller clips, including deleting some of the blank clips.
I feel lucky if I am able to transfer two or three clips before it crashes. I do not have sound on the CD. I can view it just fine as is, in WM Player; I just can't edit it in any way. There is contiguous space that would allow the clips to be saved contiguously, so what is the problem with the crashing, or just freezing up?

It sure seems that no one really knows. Has anyone had success with WMM v.2?

Check the Problem Solving > Acceleration and Codecs page of my site.... it
covers most reasons for crashing or freezing.

I would depend on a lot of factors such as what format is your video file
saved to CD as. Movie Maker does not handle all video/audio formats nor
does any editor that I am aware of. WM Player allows you to play various
formats but that does not mean Movie Maker will edit those files. It is
very possibly that no one really knows for sure as the details are a bit
vague and it could be a variety of problems, not just with Movie Maker but
with your system.

I have had great success with WMM v.2 as well as several other editors. If
you wish to try some others, some of which are free or have trial downloads
you can look here:

Hello there,

There are I am sure many thousands of people (I am one) who have
great success with Windows Movie Maker. Those that do not invariably
have something wrong on their machine. There does seem to be a
growing number of people who try to use Non-Microsoft files within
Movie Maker. The most common of these files are Mpeg and MP3. These
files, dependent upon which software was used to encode them, will
almost always not work well in Movie Maker, this is because these
file types do not have one standard...they have many and in my book
that makes them non-standard. Because there is no one standard with
these files Movie Maker, which requires a deeper involvement with the
files than a file viewer, often fails to work well.

The video you copied to CD. What format is it in? If they are not
either DV-AVI or WMV then you should consider converting them to
DV-AVI before you proceed.

Hello Friend,

Through my experience i did record vhs movies to VCD or DVD using my ATI all in one graphic card. The captured files should be mpg, wmv or avi
will surely worked just follow the instructions. I used Nero Ver 6 or Roxio Easy CD_DVD Creation Ver 6 to burn to VCD/DVD. I'm using Pentium 4,
CPu 2.4Ghz, Ram 768MB & 160GB HardDrive. Email me if you want me to show you step by step procedure.

Hi there,

MPeg is good for advanced users making DVD's and for all other users who want
to save space on their hard drives. Unfortunately Movie Maker does not do all
that well with MPeg...its a pity.

For an all round format DV_AVI is great. Its accepted in every video editor I
have ever tinkered with.

Best of luck.

If you created an AVI file then you should be able to import it to Movie
Maker and edit it.

Thanks Rich,

There are always a multitude of factors that COULD be involved in the
problems it appears, according to the WMM threads, that A LOT of individuals
experience the same problems. I am not adding transitions or any curly
cues. I simply want specific slides of the video to run consecutively.
I had an old VHS Recorded Video, I have it saved as an AVI as well as a
MPEG file. I am hoping to create an AVI file with MM (which it supposedly
will do) but the incessant crashing is something I have fought with for at
least the previous five years. That is how long ago I made the CD! I don't
even recall how to hook up the VHS Recorder or how I made the CD. I
definitely need detailed instructions... again.
I write the instructions down but lots has changed over the past five years.
My computer has been man-handled somewhat but I have (1) 15 GIG drive
and (1) 20 GIG and (1) 2 GIG drive. Pumped up to do more than it was
originally intended most likely. but this is what My Computer, Properties
has to say:
Processor:
AMD ATHLON Procesor 1.0 GHz; 496 MB of RAM;
SIS 7018 Audio Driver
ATI TV Wonder Video
Legacy Audio
Media Control
Video Codecs
Audio Codecs
ATI TV Wonder Crossbar

Running Windows XP Home, fully updated
and other stuff that I have no clue what it means.

I know how to drive my car as well, but lordy help if I were to try to
tell you anything about how it works!~lol!~
