does anyone know how to resume an interrupted file download?

Hi all, does anyone know how to resume an interrupted file download? The
windows operating system have is XP which i'm new too, i can't remember the
other system i was running but i do remember that if a file was interupted by
something such as timed out internet connection, when i reconnected i was
able to resume file download from where i left off. Is this possible with
windows XP and if so, how?
