Does anyone know a source for dead Microdrives?

I have searched high and low for someplace to get them, I figure that
they must be so small that folks just toss them when they die. I'd
really like to get a hold of some and pop them open to add to my
collection of opened HDAs the largest of which weighs in at around 75#.
if you find or know of a source, please contact me at darius @ plasm
dot com.

Post this to rec.photo.digital.

You'll get some.

Keep an eye on ebay, I often see broken devices being sold there. It
wouldn't surprise me to see one there selling for mere pennies.

Tip:
One cool (and largely unknown) thing about broken equipment is that
manufacturers often offer repair services at a flat rate. I was once
working on a broken digital camera, maybe a nikon? Anyway, it had a
mechanical lens cover that opened when you turned on the camera and closed
when you turned the camera off. Before attempting to work on the delicate
mechanism, I called Nikon about having a factory repair done. They told me
it was $150 for a repair, no matter what the problem was. I asked the lady
"so if I run this camera over with my truck and send it in, its still $150?"
She confirmed, it was basically a refurb replacement they sent. So, I
attempted the repair myself knowing that it couldn't get any worse-no matter
what I did it would always be $150 to repair. In the end, I ripped out the
fancy lens cover and had the lady buy a $5 snap on cover from a local shop.

So, if you can get a broken $800 camera for $25 then send to the factory for
$150 you have the $800 camera for $175. Not bad.
