Does anyone ever look further back than 4 or 5 days?

I'll scroll up a couple days, but there really isn't much activity past 2-3
days, so I usually stop. Yes, there are a lot of messages and a lot get old.
But, good news is that you can search them (I use Google Groups) for the
older information.

5 days or more... Not usually, unless it's a thread I'm trying to help
someone with.

I have noticed that with the over 44,000 messages on this news group, that
you can get lost pretty quick. Does anyone look to answer messages more
than a few days old? If someone replies say 5 days or more, does anyone
scroll old messages or do you keep to the last day or so?

Just curious

I really don't read message more than a week old. After that, it seems the
original poster probably won't come back to read the reply. That, and there
are too many messages being sent now to read them all.

Personally, I read things as they go, or not at all. It's usually been
duplicated shortly thereafter anyway.

Most of the regular responders keep track and go back as long as the history
in their folders. If I answered someone 25 days ago and I see there is a new
post in the thread, I go back.

It's called thread monitoring. Press ctrl | H to see only the threads you
have participated in.

This, of course, as long as you are using Windows Mail or Outlook Express as
your news reader. Anything else and you are on your own to figure it out.

I check in here pretty frequently. If I know the answer to a question, I'll
answer it. I always do a <Ctrl>+H on a group before leaving it, so if
there's a follow-up question or reply to one of my posts, I'll be aware of
it, even if it isn't that recent.

If I'm interested in a particular post but don't know the answer, I'll flag
to watch, then sort watched messages to the top.

I've got my newsreader (Forte Agent - the best Windows newsreader,
period,). set to automatically watch any thread I participate in. So
if anyone responds to one of my posts tomorrow or a week from now I'll
see it.

So if you asked a question, I answer and then you follow-up, I'll see
it and answer (unless somebody else does beforehand).

The smartest thing anyone can do when they come here with a question
is search the newsgroup in their newsreader or via Groups *before*
asking. 9 X out of 10 they'll find the answer to their question
without asking.

I've only become active here in the past 3 weeks and in that short
time I've seen new threads started asking the same question that had
been just asked a few days earlier (sometimes even the same day, in a
different thread).

If you don't find what you're looking for via your newsreaders search,
try searching the group via Google Groups. They go back to day one.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
