Try this to correct the problem:
Go to the folder (assuming XP):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS
Delete the files in the folder
(but don't delete the folder)
Restart the computer.
After restart if any printers are shown in the Printers
and Faxes folder... DELETE THEM ALL!
Re-install printers using newest drivers for the
printers. Remember to replace existing drivers if asked.
If this helps, what has been happening is: One of the
existing drivers is having "problems" and causing the
Spooler to crash. When that happens files are left behind
and can keep the spooler from re-loading during startup.
Also if this helps... I am not from Microsoft, but the
Microsoft Knowledge base is where I found this fix to
similar errors to what you described. Sorry, don't
remember which article.
