Documents slow to open using Windows Explorer

When trying to open ANY document (doc, xls, pdf, txt) from inside Windows
Explorer, the computers goes into the hourglass mode for approx. 3 minutes
before the associated program opens the document. Starting Word, then File,
open, opens the document immediately. Also, disconnecting the network cable
(10/100 Active Directory network) allows the document to open immediately
from within Explorer. Is something causing Explorer to look all over the
network before opening the document?

There are 2 drive mappings the user needs daily; will this keep him from
accessing these drives?

That's actually an easy one to fix:

start REGEDIT

Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Extension

Now check on the extensions that NO Extension is linked to an application
that is stored on a network drive where you do not have access anymore!

Change the Data field to a local application and the delay is fixed!

cheers

I do not have any network drives mapped in the extension folder. All are
mapped to the hard drive. This problem is spreading throughout my network.
OS is XPPro SP3, Office 2003 SP3, IE6 SP3.
