Documents open unformatted with codes at end of document

I'm using Office2000 Pro and lately in Word when I open a previous document
it is no longer formatted. I shows the basic text, then at the end of the
document there is anywhere between a few lines and a few pages of what
appear to be formatting codes. It seems as though I can no longer use
previous documents, prepared in this same Word program. This running on XP
Pro. Any suggestions? Thanks
 
When you open files through File | Open, make sure that the dropdown menu is
*not* set to Recover Text from Any File.
