Why in my documents folder i can see shortcuts of My Videos, My pictures, My
Music but if i click on them i get an Access denied error message? It saies
me it's not accessible.

Davide,
That's because those aren't actually folders.
They are called junctions, pretty much shortcuts, to get old legacy stuff
from where it was in XP to the new folders in Vista.
in Vista all that stuff is in users drive:\Users\your name.
you can also use a command prompt to see where all the stuff is located now.
The command line:

dir /al

Will just show junctions (or symlinks) in the current directory. Or, a
simple dir /a will work. (thx-Jimmy B)

Ok, so why putting those junctions in my documents if i can't use them?
Sorry, maybe i did not understood the real utility of those items...

You're just not going at the problem the correct way.

Start | Click on your Name/account | open the folder you want

It's not there for "you" to use. It's there for compatibility with older,
improperly written programs that have the old paths hard-coded in. It will
redirect them to the correct location.

I need more of those duh.edu seminars.

What about simply dir (and are you sure dir /al is what you meant to type
because when I do a dir /? I don't see it listed as a switch. When I type
in dir /al I get this Jeff--I can't make that switch work any way I try
typing it, I get:

C:\Windows\system32>dir /al
Volume in drive C is New Volume
Volume Serial Number is B494-F07

Directory of C:\Windows\system32

File Not Found

I did see this on Chris Perillo's site as to dir /al and junctions but I
can't make it work.

When I type in dir I get this--I am showing you the tail (end):

Thanks for reminding me of that command lol although I can't make dir /al
work. I'm having a good time going through the Windows XP Command Line
(MSFT Press) William R. Staneck and seeing how many do and don't work in
Vista. It could take me until the next OS to get half way through this. I
haven't forgotten to email you my stuff on icons.

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?isbn=0735620385

Will get it to you soon. I'm going through the .dlls in the Vista System 32
folder to mine icons manually. and learn which .dlls contian decent ones.
Sometimes I get a good yield, and sometimes disappointing as to the
amount/quality of icons.

Did I tell you when I went to simply substitute an icon for WMP's icon on
the start menu after you called my attention to its being worse than Ugly
Betty it got mad and wouldn't open up until I rebooted? I even tried
installing WMP 11 onto Vista (which sometimes fixed a lot in XP WMP and
still does with WMP11 on XP and it wouldn't let me.)

Hmmmm,

Checking with the Dept Chair,
Dr. Ummmm

He reminded me of this,

An abbreviated list, for you to peruse.
We definitely need more command line info, however,
and I put in a request with Dr. Ummm for continuing education credits

Where is "start> your name/account"?

your name account reached on the start menu?

Do you mean somewhere in user accounts?

Do you mean to type a file path into run or the combo run box ie7 address
bar you can make by right clicking the taskbar>toobars>address and planting
it in the taskbar?

There are no reparse points in the System32 folder so you're
seeing exactly what should be returned by that command.

Thanks Paul and Jeff for the clarification.
