Documents Could Not Be Found message

In XP Professional with SP 2, all of a sudden, after 1.5 years of fine
operation, whenever I try to open Excel files in My Documents I receive an
error message: "Documents.xls could not be found," followed by messaes "XLS
could not be found" and then similar messages for each word in the filename.
Then the file opens. How do I clear this?

1. You are in the wrong group. Try Excel....
2. This has worked for many:

With Excel closed. Go to:
Start/Run and type: excel /unregserver
Then:
Start/Run and type: excel /regserver
