I am the primary User on my computer. When I look at the sub folder,
Recent, under my User name folder, there must be at least 1,500 entries.
Although they all carry today's date, some of the files/programs haven't
been accessed for months. Is there any reason to retain all of these
entries, or should the contents of this folder be purged periodically?

Also, if there is a User name listed that is no longer valid, is there an
appropriate procedure to follow for removing same?

Thanks in advance.

The User that I am trying to delete does not show up when one follows the
Control Panel route. I believe that this is because when I follow the path:
My Computer\Manage\Local Users and Groups\Users, the User is shown there,
but under properties the account is listed as "disabled." Should I enable
it, and then head back to Control Panel for deletion, or can one remove it
right there immediately after it is enabled?

It is of interest that when I went to "clear" the Start Menu Programs, per
your instructions, the Recent folder (under Documents and Settings) for this
disabled User was cleared, but not for the active User folder. Why would
this be? I log in under the active User name.

.... also of some confusion is the fact that after clearing the Start Menu
Programs, I then attempted to customize the Start Menu. This took me
directly to the Start Menu folder under the disabled User, not the current
User under which I logged in as. The system seems to be responding by using
the disabled User name, and not the one that is active...

Sir George --

Always the danger of getting in over one's head! This all started several
months ago. When logging on, I would receive an error message stating that
my User profile in the registry was corrupt, and that I was being logged in
under a temporary (Default?) User name. Then, I lost my original User name
altogether. I had to reload software and, essentially, duplicate the system
that I had previously. Very time consuming.

I back up my system periodically and restore it to two other computers (same
folders/file locations). However, now I have a different User name on the
computer that is the original source for files. I am trying to get back to
my original User name, which will simplify the backup and restore process.
The folders for User1 and User2, for example, appear in Documents and
Settings when I am in User1. I have made the Favorites folders identical
under both User names. However, when I log on as User2, there are no files
in the User2 Favorites folder. It is as if the folders that I see when
logged on as User1 are not recognized (or seen) when I am logged on as
User2. My thought was to make the User folders look-a-likes (which I have
done), and then to delete one of the User names. But, even the desktops do
not contain the same icons when I log in as User2. And, I cannot locate
certain programs, which exist under the User1 profile, when I am in the
User2 environment. Obviously, I must not totally understand the User/Group
profile process.

Maybe my striving for uniformity is overkill. I do not want to delete a
User name, only to find that I have to rebuild my system from scratch to get
back to square one. The easy solution is to do nothing. But, I enjoy the
challenge of attempting to master the Windows 2000 system, even if from a
neophyte's perspective!

Why is it that when I am logged in under one User name, I am not able to
locate certain programs (Start\Programs) when I am logged in under another
User name? Do I gather that there is only limited compatibility/overlap
between one User profile and another? I do not want to delete one User
profile, only to find that I cannot retrieve certain programs when logged in
on the remaining User profile. Sometimes a little computer ignorance is not
bliss. If I create a folder\files under one User profile, must I presume
that this folder/files are not accessible when logged in under another User
profile? Is this true for executable programs also?

Sounds like someone renamed one or more accounts.

It's up to the application developer as to where they place the shortcuts.

\all users is common to all users that logon (desktop, start menu, etc.)

so place (or move) your shortcuts to;
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

I'm beginning to understand the drill -- finally.

Thanks for your assistance.
