Document Compatilbility? Windows 98 -> XP

I just bought a new computer with Windows XP, but am having troubles with my old documents that were first created with Windows 98. I transferred them over to the new pc just fine (I thought anyway), however turning them into WordPerfect docs has been problematic. At first I just opened them and then resaved them as WordPerfect docs, but then when I went back into them they'd turned to gobbledygook. Next, I took the text and cut and pasted it into a new WordPerfect file. This has worked just fine, I can open the docs again, revise, resave, etc... just like normal. However, when I try to email the docs, no one can open them.

Extremely frustrated here... I work from home, one computer, no network, rely on Word docs and being able to email them for my livelihood and am unable to work at this moment. Been trying to find an answer on MS's convoluted webpage to no avail. Dell is no help, saying have to go through MS for the answer. Can't afford the sky-high prices of calling the paid-only MS help line. Anyone have any ideas? If you know of a reliable patch, could you give me the link?

You are not clear as to what word processors you are using and exactly what
versions. But, let me guess: You have some old WORDPERFECT documents
(maybe version 5 or 6) that you are reading into WORD XP, then saving as
WORD XP documents??? If so, you could lose a lot of formating in the
process. If you try to read WORDPERFECT 5 into WORD XP you will lose even
more ! (I tried that once.)

As for others not being able to read the documents that you are writing,
ideally they should have the same version of WORD as you. But, things are
not quite that bad, since WORD XP can write documents in WORD97 format, and
a few older formats. That is under Tools, Optuions, Compatibility.
However, the compatibility is not perfect, and if you and they both edit the
document, soon or later something will be lost.
