Doc Template does not open in Word when selected from New Office D

Hi,
Installed IE7 last week - may not have anything to do with the problem, but
I always open Word from the General Template which opens when I click on the
New Office Document button which is top of the list when I click on the Start
button.
The Blank template (Normal.dot) was the first to decide not to open, but now
none of my templates will open from this source - though they will if I call
up the Task Pane. I get an hour glass whilst it is doing a virus scan and
then nothing except a mostly greyed-out Word window.
I am running Windows XP Home with Word as part of Microsoft Works package.

I am having a similar problem with my normal template. It does not appear in
the list of other templates in the appropriate folder, and I cannot even
locate it using the search function. I tried to create a new one and then do
a compare and merge under the tools menu, but the file was not locatable.

Although I had trouble with the beta release of IE7 and uninstalled it
immediately, I have reinstalled the full release, though I do not use it as
my primary browser, and hope it is not related to this issue.
