doc prints from desktop but not from in Word?

No takers for this in the Word group...

Curious one here,

Tried to print a fairly large (96) page doc, from within word, but it just
came up as 'spooling' from within the print manager and gave 'n/a' for the
number of pages. This 'spooling' was actually the lock up of Word and taking
100% of the processor.

However, if one simply selects print from a right click menu of the file on
the desktop, the file goes straight into the spooler with 96 pages instantly
filled in, and gets on with the print job.

I notice that the 'print' properties panels have the HP logo inthe corner
and are less full of options than the set that comes on when working from
within Word. Is there a special set that Word uses that don't work for this
particular file? (Other files are still printing ok).

I also notice that the troublesome file has not appeared in the recently
opened list for Word either?

Can anyone explain?

(I'm sure you can :-))

Cheers

Are you using File, Print and then selecting the printer or just hitting the
printer icon in the toolbar?

Tried from all the usual ways within Word, but always it went to the spooler
and stuck, with n/a for the number of pages. Whereas, right clicking from
the desktop sent it to the spooler straight away and began printing,
without, apparently, opening Word.

And, as I said, it is also curious that the file does not register on the
recently opened list when it is opened in Word. I suspect that the two are
related: what could cause this?

Thanks for getting back to me,

Steve

Try saving it as a RTF (rich text format) so that you shouldn't lose all the
formatting within the file, then opening the RTF and saving as a DOC.... or
saving the DOC in another Filename using File, Save As.

What happens then?

Saving as a doc: one gets the warning that the doc contains tracked changes,
and then the saved version has the extra width to allow for the call outs.
Opting to print even just one page still locks up the cpu as before. I note
that task manager shows two copies of the file apparently open, when there
is only one?

Saving as RTF: on trying to open the rtf 'this causes a serious problem and
needs to close'.

Weird,

Thanks again Cari,

Steve
