doc file opens connect to NT login dialog

I have a document linked in my html to a word .doc file and the server for
this document is located in server1. Both the html and doc file are copied
from server2.
When I connect to the html document using http to server1 and try to open
the doc file, it shows up the "Connect to server2" dialogue box asking for NT
login Id and password. This happens in some Windows XP clients and same does
not happen in Windows 2000 clients. Can anybody throw some light in
understanding and resolving this issue.

Hi Jey,

Most likely the document was based on a template that is (was?) stored
on server2, and Word is trying to open that template. Look in Tools >
Templates and Add-Ins to see if the attached template has a path that
points to server2.

If that's the case, attach your local Normal.dot to the document
instead, and resave (you may have to make some edit, such as inserting
and then deleting a space, to make Word think there's something to
save). From then on, the document will be attached to the local
Normal.dot of whatever PC opens the file, and you shouldn't be asked
for a connection to server2 any more.
