Hi Jack

I'm not clear if the documents are opening in Word or not. If they are
opening in Word but showing the 'messed up' format, then in the File > Open
dialog, select 'Word documents' in the dropdown - you will probably find you
have it set to 'recover text from any file'. If the problem is that the
documents are not opening in Word when you double-click, then you have
probably lost the association between the .doc extension and Word. You can
get that back by right-clicking on the file, choosing Open with > Choose
program, selecting Word manually, and ticking the box to always use this
program to open files of this type.

Okay

documents ARE opening in Word.

did the file> open dialog WAS set at .doc

files DO open in Word when I double click them.

Here is another example of one of these files (has the extension .doc)

Still hoping someone can solve the mystery.. I have had these problems for
many years.. It doesn't happen to all my .doc files, only the ones that
seem to be most important to me.

thanks Jack

Hmm - I'm now wondering if these are Word 97 format documents at all, or
whether they've been saved by another application or in another application
format - old FrameMaker files often had the .doc extension and showed rather
similarly when opened in Word, I seem to remember. Do you have 'Confirm
conversions' checked in Tools > Options > Edit, and does that reveal any
more when you double-click?

You could try selecting different conversion and recovery options in the
File>Open dialog, or different applications from the Open with > Choose
program dialog, but I suspect this is going to be a lost cause and Word
really cannot read these files, either because they are in an unrecognisable
format, or because the files are corrupt.

Margaret I suspect you are right, and some back up program I used (can't
remember which one(s)) may have compressed the files..

Guess I'll have to try and look up all the various backup programs I have on
this computer and try them all

maybe a lesson to me to quit playing with all the shareware stuff..

Thanks for the help anyway..
