do you need internet to load Word onto a computer

No, but it may be difficult to persuade the installer of this, as it wants
to install Internet Explorer if you don't already have it (sometimes even if
you do). The reason for this is that "user assistance" is increasingly
provided online rather than in local Help files. Although you can use Word
without an Internet connection, you have access to much greater resources
(Help, clip art, templates, etc.) if you are connected.

If you have Word 2003 and no internet, you will have limited clip art.
