I have many people over the past two weeks that have had
cdroms, cdrws, dvdroms or dvdrw drives that have just
stopped working. I have two computers setting here and
one cdrw that was not a year old just stopped last week
and today my other computer the cdrom just stopped
working. In both cases it looks like they are trying to
read but the just keep going to the disk and that is
all. I have had other people who the same thing has
happen to over the past week. I also have notice on
different forums more posting about cd drives stopping
working. In my case both drives were on the second IDE
controller as primary and in both cases I could replace
the drives and the new one worked.

There's no virus I've ever heard of that can cause hardware
failure.

I had not heard of one either but it just seems strange
that it started happening to different people in the same
week. In the case of my cdrw I ran dvdinfo and it shows
everything ok. It did show region code as n/a but I
think it was that way before. It would be something new
if someone came out with a program that could damage the
software in your drives or other equipment. I did reload
the firmware and that did not do anything. I took the
case off it and cleaned the inside and recheck every
connection but still did not work. Well I ended up
getting it for free anyway so it is not like I am loosing
any money. My cdrom that went bad is a nec28c and it is
really old. My concern was that others had the same
thing happen to one drive and I had seem what seem like
more post about drive problems.
I guess it is just time for me to replace both drives.

All mine are working fine.... single DVD Burner in my desktop, 2 DVD ROM
drives (one multi-region, one R1) and one CD Burner in hubby's PC and one
Combo in my notebook. No changes in the past few weeks in their behavior at
all!

<snip>

It's just one of those odd coincidences. I see it all the time. One day,
everyone will have a dead modem, two days later, it will be a rash of RAM
upgrades.

The spooky one was where I had 3 computers next to each other on one bench
and they had identical backgrounds with the identical (ugly) color scheme,
with the identical picture centered in the background.

And no, these people didn't know each other, and they were all "customized"
so three people in the universe decided to choose this particular
combination out of the millions possible, and they all brought their
computers in for repair within a short period of time.
