do updates cause freezing/crashing?

I've not had many problems with my laptop until someone
insisted that I dowload the security updates from
microsoft's website...now it seems that the computer
freezes often - twice so far this morning.

Any suggestions on how to minimize these freezes??

It's possible, if you were to list the specific updates applied, that
somebody here may know about the problem. Get the list of updates
from WindowsUpdate - View installation history.

Please describe the freezes - what error message are presented, what
exactly does the system do? What programs are running when it
freezes?

The more details you can provide, the better chance of a solution
being provided.

It's remotely possible that you picked up malware while you were
downloading. Are you using a router and / or firewall? How about
antivirus and antimalware?
