I recently posted on this newsgroup and within 24 hours,
my email address was hijacked and I began receiving return
email notifications.

I take responsibility for being stupid enough to post my
email address in a public forum, but Microsoft should also
take responsibility for not using a newsgroup system that
gives the poster the option of hiding their email address
and only allowing it to be used for blind responses from
other posters. This is common practice on all of the
other forums I use, but then no one ever accused Microsoft
of being savvy about little things like security!

Use a dummy email address in your postings. You might
lose a direct response, but you will avoid getting
hijacked.

One more lesson learned about trusting Microsoft to do
anything sensible and in the best interest of their
customres!

This is NOT a forum like online bulletin boards, but a usenet newsgroup to
which there is a web based interface. Usenet protocols require certain
fields to be populated in the header of a post, but most savvy people do not
put their legitimate email address in there. MS did not define the
requirements for these protocols so it's not their fault people have been
able to write software capable of fetching email addresses from posts....
No sensible person would let their home address be posted on a public
noticeboard, so why would they let their email address become known on an
electronic one?

Also, most people who provide help in these newsgroups do not mail responses
directly, but to the group where the question was asked. Information is for
everyone to benefit from...

It's the user at fault here, not the service providers...

Greetings --

Everything beyond where I've snipped was completely superfluous
and irrelevant.

What an absolute fool you are.
Never post your e-mail address in any public newsgroup.
Never post your e-mail address on a website.
So on so forth.
And if your e-mail got "hijacked", YOU'RE the one who doesn't know
security! Your 'secret' question & answer must have been obvious.

It doesn't matter that this is a Microsoft newsgroup. It's public.

Was it hijacked or were you just put on a spam list?
