NO SP2

Look it's not brain surgery. Whether it is a car, a tank,
a computer, a service pack, whatever, there are always
problems with new things. For god sakes, if the computer
has worked without SP2 up to this point, it will work
without SP2 after this point. Unless you know for sure
that SP2 will definitely fix a problem you have, than
just wait a few months until all of the bugs are worked
out!

SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates about 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit.

YMMV. But for those who are concerned about problems that
might be caused by SP2, then follow the standard precautions
of making a backup image file of the system partition with
Ghost, DriveImage, TrueImage, etc. If the SP2 update fails,
then there is very little lost. If the SP2 update succeeds,
then Windows XP has been brought up to date.

Installed SP2 last night. Took some time but no problems here!

Right on the mark and besides that the SP2 installation advised backing up
before installing. I haven't used the XP backup but it looks like BackupMyPC
in philosophy. I use BackupMyPC for doing a differential backup on my file
server in the middle of the night but nothing beats an image program for
ease of use and speed especially if you just want a snapshot of the whole
disk. I use DriveImage 2002.

I find it a bit strange that people who hope to find a fix via a newsgroup
don't understand the need for backups and an easy trustworthy way to do
them.

Users tend to post about failures rather than successes! The initiator of
the thread does not say why he failed! You need to prepare for major
changes, be patient whilst carrying them out and then tidy up afterwards.

Hi, I have just sent off for the cd from Microsoft and when it arrives I
will do just that (make a clone of the drive first) simple, I hope!
