I would not recommend installing WD"7" until we are given some more
information.

A new install of the MSI yields:
WD VERSION 1.1.1593
ENGINE 1.1.2204.0
DEFS VER 1.0.0.0

A check for updates yields:
WD VERSION 1.1.1593
ENGINE 1.1.2204.0
DEFS VER 1.15.2336.7

Which I believe is what we were all dealing with yesterday.
No indication in the program at all about a version "7"

very, very, strange:
Talk to us WD TEAM

The Mess is now "clarified" in the previous Thread:
"Windows Defender 7.0 available"
as of 4:15PM PT

Time from Occam's announcement to Robert Dyer's reply,
4 hrs and 8 min.

Can we leave the announcements to the reliable sources please.
This was just stupid.

?:-\
Tim

That is not an announcement.
That is a download page, with a description.

Nothing on that page says "new and improved version" of WD, "get it now".

Talking of reliability. I`ve always placed my trust in the COU web site and
general reading when it comes to announcements of updates - albeit defs or
software. Its never let me down yet and NO there was no reference to a new
version of WD ever being available. No need to buzz with excitement guys.
Relax !! Take it easy! Calm down !! It think there has become a tendency, on
this newsgroup, for some people (in their enthusiasm to help), to be the
first to make the announcement B4 checking out the facts carefully. Perhaps
its high time for us to leave this to the professionals.

Stu,

In the interests of full disclosure I must point out that "I" first heard
about the "WD7" release at COU [Calendar of Updates]. It was after reading
it "there" that I came here for more information.

Because of my vast arsenal :) I rely on COU a lot to keep me informed. But
yesterday they dropped the ball too. You have to remember that that group
is full of people like us. The announcement remained there for about as long
as it was here. I assume the person who posted it found the information here
or at the "Beta news" site mentioned in the original thread. The information
was taken down by 7:00 I think.

They have "some kind" of [corrected ??] "Announcement" for today:
================================================
Event Date: 16 March 2007 (Single Day Event)
Windows Defender Signature Update
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s...re/default.mspx

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1592.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2306.0
Definition Version: 1.16.2344.6
Timestamp: 3/15/2007 at 4:01 PM
================================================

but note the version numbers

it says plainly in the SUPPORTED Systems section what OS should be installed on.

You are correct Tim about the update that was posted at CoU being wrong and
it definately stayed there too long before it was finally removed. That is
MY fault (I am Admin there) and it should have been hidden while we
discussed the update further. It was not and I apologize for that. You are
also correct about the member that posted it got it originally from that
"BETA news" I believe. They had it posted incorrectly too. As far as today's
"corrected" update. That has nothing to do with what transpired yesterday.
That is simply a normal signature and engine update that was released
overnight which can be obtained either through the program updater or
Windows Updates site. Sorry for any confusion created by the incorect update
staying at CoU yesterday as long as it did. We are all volunteers and we do
our best to keep the Calendar accurate.
I hope this clears up whatever confusion still remains. :)

Roddy,

Thank you for following up.
There is no need to apologize so profusely :) . As I pointed out COU is
full of people like us [i.e. volunteers]. COU is a most excellent site and I
have, and will continue to, visit it several times a day.

Thanks for the kind words Tim. We try to do our best and we take pride in it
being accurate (Most of the time LOL) and thanks for visiting CoU. :)

Can we therefore infer from this episode that WD is not a high priority
as far as Microsoft is concerned and so it is left to a bunch amateaurs
to develop it and support it?

How strange it is!!
