Do need these files?

In my owners folder are two files, one named "NTUser", the other named "r".
The NTUser is 4.59mb and the other is 1.91kb. What are these and do I need
them? Thanks James

NTUSER.DAT is your profile (registry settings.) Leave it alone.

Don't know what "r" is.

If its not hurting anything and you don't know what it is - and you have
searched - you either should rename/move it and see what breaks and/or leave
it be.

Trying to free up space or something? Because that is not the place to
start. *grin*

If you are comfortable with the stability of your system, you can delete the
uninstall files for the patches that Windows XP has installed...

You can run Disk Cleanup - built into Windows XP - to erase all but your
latest restore point and cleanup even more "loose files"..

You can turn off hibernation if it is on and you don't use it..

When you hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system's
memory to the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys
file will always equal the amount of physical memory in your system. If you
don't use the hibernate feature and want to recapture the space that Windows
uses for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

- Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to Start, Settings,
Control Panel, and click Power Options).
- Select the Hibernate tab, clear the "Enable hibernation" check box, then
click OK; although you might think otherwise, selecting Never under the
"System hibernates" option on the Power Schemes tab doesn't delete the
hiberfil.sys file.
- Windows will remove the "System hibernates" option from the Power Schemes
tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file.

You can control how much space your System Restore can use...

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Highlight one of your drives (or C: if you only have one) and click on
the "Settings" button.
4. Change the percentage of disk space you wish to allow.. I suggest moving
the slider until you have just about 1GB (1024MB or close to that...)
5. Click OK.. Then Click OK again.

You can control how much space your Temporary Internet Files can utilize...

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and shrink the size it stores to a
size between 64MB and 128MB..

- Open ONE copy of Internet Explorer.
- Select TOOLS -> Internet Options.
- Under the General tab in the "Temporary Internet Files" section, do the
following:
- Click on "Delete Cookies" (click OK)
- Click on "Settings" and change the "Amount of disk space to use:" to
something between 64MB and 128MB. (It may be MUCH larger right
now.)
- Click OK.
- Click on "Delete Files" and select to "Delete all offline contents"
(the checkbox) and click OK. (If you had a LOT, this could take 2-10
minutes or more.)
- Once it is done, click OK, close Internet Explorer, re-open Internet
Explorer.

You can use an application that scans your system for log files and
temporary files and use that to get rid of those:

Those can help you visually discover where all the space is being used.

In the end - a standard Windows XP installation with all sorts of extras
will not likely be above about 4.5GB to 9GB in size. If you have more space
than that (likely do on a modern machine) and most of it seems to be used -
likely you need to copy *your stuff* off and/or find a better way to manage
it.

message is a faked message - the headers prove that I didn't make such

I'm one of the good guys, but I've (as well as others) have exposed an
unethical hack that has pirated code from others and then replaces the
credits in that code with his name - he's linked to pornographic
materials on his website and posted the them in these groups, etc...
He's impersonated many people in his attempt to tarnish their
reputations, has used about 30 different names in several years, and he
has posted through 7 different servers and more than that many IP's in
the years past.... He's even bought a domain name in my honor (name) and
posted filth on it like he has his own website and even the seedsv.com
website he use to spam all over the net....
 
Hi James. My name is Kaja and I would like to help you. Since this post is
posted in the basics forum I will assume you are a novice. Do not worry
about every individual file.

Here is what I always tell people about deleting, files, folders, and
programs. Based on the names and my knowlege of XP the file names you cited
I am certain they are legitimate neccessary files. I say this because one
version of Windows is called Windows NT. That being said; The basic rule of
thumb I always tell people is do not delete anything unless:

1. You know exactly what the file, folder program etc. is and what is does.
Take into account programs, files and folders sometimes work together and
interface, so say you delete one file folder or program and it is tied to
something else that it needs it to work. Then something will not work.

That being said, there are unnescary files you can delete in XP to free up
space.
You can clean out the cache of Internet explorer. Open it up and go to
tools and internet options. Depending on what version of Internet Explorer
you have you will find the deleteing options in differnt places. There you
can delete the temporary internet files, clear the history, and so on and so
forth. You can also set Internet Explorer to delete history, all the pages
you have visited that browsing session, by going to:
Tools ,Internet options. Where it says Delete Browsing History upon exit
,check the box that says delete browsing history on exit. Hit apply, and OK.

Now in addition to this there is a great free cleanup utility program that
will do all this for you so you do not have to do it manually all the time.
It is callled CC Cleaner and you can download it from http://www.cccleaner.com

There are two more ways of deleting unnescary files I would like to tell you
about:

1. Go to start, all proprams, accessories, disc cleanup. Select C your
hard drive wait a few minutes and a box will pop up showing you categories of
what you can delete. Check all the boxes with numbers next to them and
delete that stuff.

2. Go to start, run and type "prefetch" and hit OK
A window will pop up with a bunch of unnescary files in it. On the top hit
"Edit" then "Select All" The screen will turn blue. Hit the delete key and
confirm deletion to recycle bin.

This should help you clean house and boost your speed a litttle bit.

While at least part of the contents of the post are true, the post
