Do I need to a sata card to use a sata drive or can I use an adapter?

I have a motherboard that doesn'y have sata, only pata. Can just get
an adapter that will take a sata cable? Or is it an entirely different
interface hence I'd need a sata pci card?

Different interface - you need a controller. Good news is they're dirt
cheap.
