OK -- I got my new Dell system one week ago. I've installed my firewall and
anti-virus programs and I am in the process of installing all those critical
updates for my XP system. There were 35 updates!!! I've installed 29. I have
questions about the remaining ones as I will not be using my computer in a
network setting or as a server.

Do I need the following:

Yes, if you value the continued security integrity of your computer,
and to avoid possible security breeches, download and install all the

MB, I would have to agree with Nicholas on this one. It is usually best to
download/install all CRITICAL updates for Windows XP. As for the other
updates, I follow the old belief, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", meaning
if all apears to be working ok, then don't bother.

Install ALL Critical updates to properly protect your computer.

You said "I will not be using my computer in a network"
The internet is a network, so patches that apply to networks generally
apply to any computer that ever connects to the internet.
It makes little difference if you connect by phone, cable DSL etc.
