do I need the .NET framework?

Many pardons if this is the wrong group to ask this question. After
replacing a failed hard disk, I installed XP home and all critical
updates including SP 2. When I try to install Office 2000 premium, it
can't find several DLL files and eventually fails to install. When I
run windows update, it shows .NET 1.1 and 2 in the available updates.
Does this mean that I do not have .NET of any version installed and if
so could this keep office 2000 premium from installing? Office 2000
premium was working well before the disk failure. I don't know why I
can't install it now. Any help or referral to the proper group is
appreciated.

I don't know the cause of your problem. However, neither .NET frameworks
should have anything to do with it.

Do you have the Office 2000 UPGRADE version or the FULL retail version? If
it is the UPGRADE then it may be looking for an old version of Office to be
installed.

Maybe post the file(s) that it says it cannot find and the actual error
message that gets displayed here and it may shed some more light on the
problem.
