When I turned on my pc using windows xp home edition the desktop
partially
comes up then the pc is "frozen" . Clicking on any icon or even the
start
button does nothing. Any ideas of what may be happening or how I fix
it? I can get into "Safe Mode".
There is no way of knowing whether you have a virus from the information
you've provided. What does a scan with your antivirus in Safe Mode
show? If you don't have a current version (not earlier than 2005) av
installed with an active subscription and updated definitions... you
should.
If this is the case, start by scanning with either Sysclean or David
Lipman's Multi-AV after going through the preparatory steps at the
first link here:

Then go through the rest of the steps from the first link.
However, there are many reasons other than viruses/malware that could
cause your issue. Something you run in Regular Mode could be failing,
for instance. It could be a program or a bad driver. Look in Event
Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]
If you are sure the computer is malware-free, you could also do

And as always, you should ask yourself the First Question In
Troubleshooting: "What changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?".
