I had to reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows
XP. I installed it on the same partition that my old
copy of XP was on. I thought that that would replace my
old copy but now when I boot up my computer a screen
comes up asking me to choose which OS to run. The two
choices are the same thing, both are called Windows XP
home Edition. Does that mean that I have 2 copies of
windows install on the same HD? Can I stop that screen
from appearing at startup? The amount of disk space XP
is using is about 1.81GB. If I do have 2 copies
installed, how do I get rid of one copy of XP? Thanks
for any help.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not correct the issue, then:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
