do flat panel monitors 'pop'?

i have a CRT monitor. it's about 4 years old. it has started to pop in the
past week. it's due to some kind of discharge, correct?

will it stop on it's own?

it's keeping me awake at night, it's loud.

do flat pannel monitors pop when they get old?

That's the high voltage arcing to ground, probably a combination of
accumulated dust and the humidity. It will stop when the ctr dies. Try
turning the monitor off, you can't see it if you are asleep. And no, LCD
panels don't use an HV transformer.

LCD's do indeed have a High Voltage output for the backlight, but not as
high a voltage as a CRT.

Look at almost any E-Bay auction for a bare LCD panel and you will see ads
for LCD w/Inverter or w/o Inverter.

I just repaired 2 laptops, each of them have a high voltage warning
stickers inside the bezel, stuck directly to the inverters them selves.

I suppose I should have used the more limiting term fly-back
transformer, since that is what is capable of providing the necessary
volatage and amperage to make that loud snap you hear.

No, they have no high voltage section to leak.

The HV on a CRT can be 15KV or so, with a current capability that can be
Lethal.
I doubt that any of the LCD display backlights or laptop power supplies come
any where near this kind of voltage.
Yes, laptops can have up to about 200 volts inside some switching power
supplies, and perhaps up to 1,500 at very low current for some types of
backlight modules.

4 years isn't old for a CRT..... I still have a 12 year old one, although
it's now used as a spare. They do dim over the years, so that eventually
the brightness has to be set to 100%.

That "pop" is probably a sign that the power supply is dying.

Flat screens don't have the high voltage that is causing the arcing.

bob I - i do turn my monitor off when i'm not using the computer. it still
pops like crazy. 'LCD panels don't use an HV transformer' so the
transformer is what causes it to pop?

danS - so do you think the flat panel will pop too when it gets old? when my
CRT was new it did not pop at all.

loren - so flat panels don't pop. thank you.

Cari - yes my color is still good too. which is why it's a little silly to
get rid of it. but i can't stand that popping at night. i'll probably donate
it.

Al - again flat pannels don't pop. thanks.

*thank you for your help!*

It is time to replace the old CRT, what you're hearing is
the capacitor and it could be a fire hazard.

If you actually turn the monitor Off, it should not be popping/snapping.
There is something seriously wrong with that monitor. If it is a 19" or
less, I would consider junking it and buying a new replacement. If a 20
or greater, and you like it, it may be worth repairing.

The HV on a CRT can be 15KV or so,

Depending on the size of the CRT, could be three times higher, or more. IOW,
don't mess with them unless you know what you're doing or you could die.

popping is indeed caused by an arc, usually always due to dust buildup.

if you are handy, taking the monitor outdoors and blasting it CARFULLY
with a leaf blower often cleans up dust accumulation issues.

if you open the case BE VERY CAREFUL! Ask a pro how to discharge the
flyback, or just keep your fingers out of there!

You can probably do a good enough job w/o opening it tho. if in doubt
don't open it.

I know, it sounds rediculous, but it can work! common practice in the tv
repair bussness actually. Lots of sets come in loaded w/ dust (and often
roaches - yuch), they go out back and get blown and bombed before a tech
will touch 'em. the customer is of course charged for the can of Raid.

Take the cover off, and using a high-pressure nozzle blow all the dust out.
This makes a mess, so do it outside or in the office of someone who's on
vacation.

Dust can and does cause arcing.

Ya beat me to it...I just fixed this identical problem in my 10 year old TV
set. Dust...not roaches. ;-)

And make sure nobody is around you!

Long ago at the end of the era of tube TV's I was pulling the tubes
from a TV set to take them for testing. I knew the CRT was still
charged but due to the design of the TV I could get the tubes out
without going too close to it and so I didn't wait for it to
discharge. Besides, I was definitely not grounded to anything, there
was no way it could discharge through me even if I goofed.

My grandfather (whose TV it was) tried to look inside and bumped my
arm. OUCH! My lack of grounding kept if from going through my body
but it sure got my hand.

oh it's the dust! i usually dust every week. so the room's pretty clean, but
i understand if it's still dusty inside the monitor. i just ordered a flat
panel so i won't bother with taking of the cover. but if somebody else is
reading this...maybe you could clean the dust out without removing the cover
with one of those compressed air spray cans? the same as the can people use
to clean keyboards.

i've had two CTR monitors now. both popped loudly when they got around three
years old. i kept them off when i wasn't using the computer. i'm hoping my
flat planel won't ever pop.

The fact that your CRTs are popping is a problem with the design or
components. My 14 year old NEC monitor has never made any noise other
than when changing resolution and is still working perfectly. It takes
a couple of minutes to warm up to full brightness and it can't support
the highest resolutions but $400 for a monitor that lasts over 14 years
is an unbeatable deal. I can only hope that my $400 Samsung LCD lasts
as long.

yeah...you pay for what you get. that's why they pop i guess. they're cheap.
$100
but hey.... $100 got me 4 years. and it's still fine color-wise. i paid $200
for my hp flat panel. guess that's cheap to some. FP have really come down in
price over the years thou.

Yep, the prices for CRTs did the same, now waiting for the plasma units
to get dirt cheap! ;-)
