Do Distribution Lists automatically update as Contacts change?

I have the impression that Distribution Lists are sort of dead end creations
because they do not automatically update to reflect new/changed/deleted
contacts that effect the Distribution List. Is this true? With the pace of
business, a static contact list, such as I believe Distribution Lists to be,
seem to be only marginally helpful.

I don't know if it's true. I can only tell you the I have yet to see the
"Update Now" button function.
Few of us use DL's because they are so buggy.
 
It would seem that the alternative to DLs would be to assign categories to
contacts. Would you agree?

However, when the Contact folder in question is a public folder, as is mine,
there is the problem with any additions to the Master Category List being
available only to the user adding the category. I believe I've seen a
workaround for that but it's not "simple."
