Hello,
I am trying to migrate a DNS server from WIN NT to
WIN2k. I have a secondary DNS server (NT) that will need
to scyn with this one. I have a WIN2K server and
insalled DNS on it. However, It does not recogize the
other DNS severs. Can I have a WiN 2k Server running DNS
be a porimary DNS server and a WIN NT server be a
secondary DNS server? If so, How do I get them to see
each other in the DNS manager?

Thank You
Rob

You should be able to do that. On the W2K computer, go to the forward zone you
want the NT4.0 server to be a secondary for and select properties/general and
make sure zone type is set to primary. Then go zone transfers page, select allow
zone transfers only to the following servers and add the ip address of your
NT4.0 dns server. Then configure your NT4.0 dns server to point to the W2K dns
server as it's master server when you create a secondary zone on it. However,
that will not migrate the information from the NT4.0 dns server to the W2K one
if that is what you are trying to do. To do that, create a secondary dns zone
on the W2K box pointing to the NT4.0 primary dns server as the master dns
server. After they replicate, change the zone type on the W2K box to be primary
and decommission the NT4.0 box. Windows 2000 uses dns as it's primary name
resolution while NT4.0 uses netbios/wins. Use ip addresses instead of computer
names or add entries to lm hosts files on the servers so that they will find
each other easier. --- Steve
