DNS Dummy

Hi there,
I'm a DNS Newbie and having some troubles understanding
where to start.

I have a 4 windows 2000 servers. 1 I want for
authentication, DNS (No DHCP req) and the others are apps
server only running citrix/Terminal services.

I only want only 1 dns server on this simple network and I
want the other servers (which will use citrix for use
connectivity) to be able to use my 'not yet installed' DC
for DNS. I've heard of active directory issues and that I
really should have dns setup properly bedore installing AD.

I am having some 'idiots guide' issues to getting this
working. I know how to do it in the novell world but not
sure about Microsoft. Could someone please advise me the
baby steps in getting this up and running so I can move on
to the Active directory installation?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Whichever machine you are going to use you can go ahead, install DNS and
point all machines to it for DNS, including itself. Make sure the Root zone
is deleted, if it has one, configure a forwarder, and set the Primary DNS
suffix (On the System properties Control panel, network identification tab)
of the machine to the actual Active Directory domain name you are going to
use. IMO, it is better to set the suffix before DCPROMO, it is a lot easier
that changing it after DCPROMO. The DC won't work right if the primary DNS
suffix does not match the AD DNS domain name.
You can configure a forward lookup zone for the name if you want, but if you
don't it is no big deal, DCPROMO will create the zone for you.

One more thing, make sure the name is DNS compliant and is not a single
label name (domain vs. domain.com) the TLD does NOT have to be com, net,
org it can just as well be .local, .lan , or even .fred if you want.
