Yesterday I transferred the primary dns role to a
different machine and set the other two dc's to secondary
dns machines. After rebooting all of the dns zones were
gone and I had to recreate everything on the primary
machine and reinstallt he secondary machines. What
happened and why would the zone just dissappear?

Were you using "AD integrated DNS" before?

If so you may have actually deleted those zones in such
a way that it propagated to the other DCs -- thus losing
your zones.

Why didn't you make sure the "new DNS" was a secondary,
with all records properly transferred before promoting it to
primary?

On the other hand, if they are all DCs, why not just leave them
all as "AD integrated DNS servers"?

Is this Win2k or Win2k3?
Was the zone Ad integrated (Stored in Active Directory in Win2k3)?
