Are there any risk if I build one box with DNS/WINS/DHCP
services and also make it a print server for 77 network
printers? What is microsoft's take on this. Or is it
better to have print server is a separate box. Please
help. Thanks.
It is *always* better to split services onto separate boxes, but it's
not required. DNS and WINS in a LAN don't usually have a lot of
traffic once the users have cached everything, although DHCP gets hit
when the system is started so you may see a performance drop at 8:00
am if all the users sign on then.
Beyond that, printer queue space can be an issue with 77 printers,
lots of drive space and a fast array is nice. This naturally depends
on what's being printed. You also risk a single point of failure by
placing all printers on one server (experience talking here...) and a
better option may be two servers with nearby printers on separate
servers. So if the Accounting1 printer is offline due to a server
failure, the Accounting2 printer on another server is still up.
