We are getting ready to move to Windows 2003 server from an NT 4.0 domain.
I know that MS DNS is required to run Active Directory. However, is it best
to run DNS on the Domain Controllers (Daces)? Or should DNS be on it's own
servers (not the Daces)? What about WINS? Where is the best place to run
WINS? Can/should I run DNS and WINS on the Daces? Thanks for any input.

I would put DNS on DC as you can use AD integrated DNS zones + secure
updates. Depending on the org. size and structure, but generally WINS could
be left on DC, but it is not so important as DNS.

The only issue of not putting DNS on DC would be in conjunction with DHCP
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q255134) but it all
depends on the size of the network. I would say DNS on DC yes as this is the
only way to have AD integrated DNS + secure updates. WINS well if you have
spare machines then .....
Do you have an article, where it stated that WINS and DNS should not be on
the same DC ?

No article. This is something my colleagues have metioned earlier. We are
running a few AD's in our network, but we haven't set up any w2k wins,
because we have a wins topology in our old nt4 environment which we are
still using. Actually, I've never given the comment a second thought,
because it hasn't been necessary in our network.

So, I guess I was a little hasty to comment on this one. If anybody has any
comment about wins/dns on the same server, please post a note about it and
if possible also links to refering material.

Sorry that I made a mess of this thread.

No problem Tom. It was just I who was curious if there is such best practice
from MS and why is that. I could buy this for large environments as one
could argue about server load, but for medium and small networks....
