DNS - What's wrong?

I'm appear to be a DNS dummy and have a small problem. I'm setting up a
small test network with a DC and a workstation. I have ISA installed on
this DC with 2 nics and the external nic is connected to my DMZ. Everything
appears to be setup correctly, i think. I was having a DNS isue that
prevented my workstaion from joining the domain but that is fixed. The
strange thing is that I can ping the server name from the workstaion but not
the other way. That confused me. I have the DC as the DNS server and I
can't even ping the external NIC fron the DC. I can't ping any external
numbers or names. I totally wiped out the DNS and re-installed it and went
thru all the Q articles and still no joy. This apears to be a very simple
setup that I can't get thru so i'm not sure what that says. Can anyone
please shed some light on my problem?? thanks

Hi Perry

My guess is that it's more to do with ISA than DNS. What version of ISA are
you running with?

Kind regards

I'm running 2004. I am trying to test prior to installing in my
environment. I will throw the question at teh ISA folks. Thanks

Mark,

I still think I might have a DNS problem. When I go into My Network Places
under teh domain I don't see any computers there. At minimum I sshuld see
the local computer is that correct? I can ping by name and number but can't
ping anything on the other side of teh public nic. I'm just a little
puzzled abotu the DNS issue that I think I have. Everything looks o but
still notheing in Network Places. Any thoughts??

Thanks

Network places does not use DNS, DNS has nothing to do with network places.
Network places relies on the computer browser service which uses WINS or
NetBIOS broadcasts.
Make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP (WINS tab) is enabled on the internal
interface, and disabled on the external interface. Also check the interface
binding order has the internal interface at the top of the binding order. Do
that by right clicking on Network Places, choose properties, in the window
that opens, in the Advanced menu, select Advanced settings. Move the
internal interface to the top of the connections pane and make sure file
sharing and client for Microsoft networks are bound only to this interface.

Hi Mark,

At some point I beleive your statement that it has to do with ISA and not
DNS but teh error that keeps comming back when I try to browse is related to
DNS. Here is the error message that comes from ISA on my browser.

ERROR CODE: 11001: Host Not Found
BACKGROUND: The error indicated that the gateway could not find the IP
address of the website you are trying to access. This is usually due to a
DNS-related error.
DATE: today
Server: isaserver.testsite.com
SOURCE: DNS ERROR

Does this tell you anything?? Thanks again.
