Hello,

I have searched throughly on the newsgroups before I post this topic but yet
nothing seems to be working with me.

I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server on my network and it is running DNS
server. I tried to enabled logging on the DNS server and have selected
different categories to log "queries, update, ... etc" but the log file size
is always zero. Moreover, I have tried to change the Registery value of the
log file name but it still shows the default name when I choose the logging
panel from properties.

When I check the Event Viewer, I find a message like this for each time I
restart the DNS server:

The DNS server was unable to open file %SystemRoot%\System32\dns\dns.log for
write. Most likely the file is a zone file that is already open. Close the
zone file and re-initiate zone write.

When I changed the log file name to dnslog.rtf, I get the following message:

The DNS server was unable to open file %SystemRoot%\System32\dns\dnslog.rtf
for write. Most likely the file is a zone file that is already open. Close
the zone file and re-initiate zone write.

Here are the registry values I currently have

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters\LogFileP
ath
REG_SZ = %SystemRoot%\System32\dns\dnslog.rtf

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters\LogFileM
axSize
REG_DWORD = 3d0900 (hexadecimal)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters\LogLevel
REG_DWORD = 331 (hexadecimal)

I make sure my antivirus has on-access scan disabled, so it is not because
of the antivirus.

Any help is appreciated

Mostafa
