DNS - two different domains

This may be a duplicate....never seen my original message
get posted.

I have two internal domains. (NT 4.0 domain abc.com and a
2000 domain with AD city.state.county). DNS is running in
the 4.0 domain with all the records needed to the public
world for mail and web. The 4.0 domain will retire soon
and will just be using the 2000 domain using DNS in the
2000 environment.

since the public name is abc.com and known to the world -
what is needed to change on the DNS in the 2000
environment city.state.county to have mail and web access
happen? This host in the 2000 environment is not know to
the world.

Do I need to just add a new zone?

Some direction is appreciated.
 
First you create a secondary zone of abc.com in your win2K DNS server and
tell it that the Primary is NT4.0 DNS server. Allow zone transfer on the
zone in the NT4 DNS server to the Win2K DNS server. Pull the zone info and
make sure everything is now present on the Win2K DNS Server.

Now, go to your Registrar and add the external IP of this new Win2K DNS
server to the list of DNS servers authoritative for abc.com

If you like, and to ensure a smooth transition, change the abc.com zone on
the Win2K to Primary and change it to Secondary on the NT4. From then on,
you will have to create all new records for abc.com on the Win2K DNS server.
You can't do it anymore on the NT4.

A couple of days before you retire the NT4, go to your Registrar again and
remove the NT4 from the list of NameServers for abc.com. When the retirement
day comes for the NT4 DNS server, just turn it off, go to the Properties of
the abc.com zone on the Win2K DNS server and remove the NT4 server from the
list of NameServers (NS). Then cross your fingers and pray very hard :)

Yup. :)

Each domain needs to be its own zone with the appropriate records for
the zone, though you may need to deal with access isuses to the box,
firewall rules, routing, etc. You only need Standard Primary for this
zone, not AD integrated.
