I have win2k server and 10 clients. All clients are XP Pro. Login takes
forever and after reading posts here I followed instructions on set up DNS
and when I run netdiag I get the following. I have no idea what the 'NetBT
name test' warning means and can't find a way to fix DNS. Any help would be
greatly appreciated and thanks.

Some guidelines with AD DNS SRV registration:

1. Point to only your internal DNS. No ISP's DNS please.

2. Primary DNS Suffix MUST be the same name as the AD DNS Domain name. IF
the Suffix is a different name or empty, then tat condition is called a
"Disjointed Namespace". A script can fix this. Hopefully is not a single
label name (see 4 below).

3. That same name MUST be spelled the same as the zone in DNS with updates
set to at least Yes.

4. Your domain name cannot be a single label name, such as "domain". It must
be in the form of "domain.com". If this is the case, a domain rename or
reinstall may be warrated. THere is a "bandaid" that will force DNS to allow
DCs to register a single label name into DNS, but it will NOT help XP
clients. They balk at single label names and resolution fails for them.
*IF* this is your case, see here for the bandaid, but suggest to fix it
somehow.

I tried all of those things. I am pointing to an ISP DNS but I can't find
where or how. My DNS has the same name which is 'techserv.trs.local' and as
far as I can tell my names all match. My vclient is showing an ISP dns when
I use netdiag but I am telling it top use my DNS. I have gone through the
steps below and if any of these are wrong I can't find where or how. Can you
tell me where or how to tell? Sorry but DNS is not one of my strong points
to say the least. Thanks

Sorry, this doesn't make sense. Can you post an Unedited ipconfig /all and
let us take a look?

I'm not sure what a "vclient" is. Can you elaborate?

Post that info I asked above and let's start off with that.
I assume that the Active Directory DNS Domain name is 'techserv.trs.local'
(as it shows up in your ADUC console as the domain name).

What is the name of your forward lookup zone?
It should be "trs.local" if the zone name is "techserv.trs.local" then that
is most likely the problem. Since DNS does not have the correct name it is
being forwarded to your ISP. Create the zone as trs.local run ipconfig
/flushdns restart netlogon the run ipconfig /registerdns

Thanks I will try that.
