I was perusing our DNS table on the local AD domain
controllers. I have seen numerous duplicate entries
where there are several hostnames referencing the same IP
address. Some of these entries I know are the same
machine that has been renamed. The former hostname is
still listed in the DNS table. Some of these former
names are a few months old. This does not seem to me to
be a good thing. What could be causing this?

By default, record scavenging is turned off. You can enable scavenging then
DNS will delete obsolete records that are time stamped. I think seven days
is default once scavenging is enabled and you have DNS timestamp the
records. If you have any persistant (no time stamp) records they will not be
scavenged.
