On the client side, I have 3 suffixes listed however if I
try to resolve say "labgui1" (FQDN = labgui.lab.cnmc.org)
it resolves to the first or second suffix in the list
(say "cnmc.org" or "chbs.cnmc.org"). Please advise.
Thanks.

Add "lab.cnmc.org" to the DNS suffix search list.
If you have that name in the search list, post an unedited ipconfig /all

What is the Primary and Connection specific suffix?
The machine may have registered in those zones, or if DHCP is registering
DHCP may have registered in one of those zones.

Not using DHCP. Ipconfig /all below:
Primary DNS suffix for this PC is "cnmc.org".

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : NHOLTER

The Primary DNS suffix of this machine is cnmc.org this computer's Fully
Domain name is nholter.cnmc.org so it is reasonable to expect the machine to
find its name in the cnmc.org zone.
Change its suffix if you want to change the behavior.

Then what I'm seeing is that 'labgui1' has an identical host name under the
other suffixes (meaning under those other zones in DNS). Maybe I'm wrong
here...

Even when you do an "nslookup"? I thought it should go to
the DNS server to resolve the FQDN?
Thanks.

It does but nslookup appends the suffixes in the suffix list.

If you want to see how nslookup resolves try this
nslookup
set d2

Then resolve the name and check the output you will see how it appends the
names.

Negative.

.
STRANGE!!! WHEN I PUT THE PARENT DOMAIN SUFFIX (cnmc.org)
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LIST, EVERYTHING RESOLVES PROPERLY!
Doesn't make sense but at least it works!
Thanks for your help!

N> I thought it should go to the DNS server to resolve the FQDN?

Converting local aliases to fully qualified domain names is done by the DNS
Client, _before_ DNS servers of any sort become involved. (The DNS protocol
deals solely in fully-qualified domain names. It has no mechanism for dealing
in local aliases.)

N> DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : cnmc.org
N> chbs.cnmc.org
N> lab.cnmc.org

The fact that "cnmc.org." comes before "lab.cnmc.org." in this list is the
reason that "labgui1.cnmc.org." is being looked up before
"labgui1.lab.cnmc.org.".
