When i setup a server with dns all works fine. Internet
websites are resolved and everything works fine.
After a while (can be 1 day or more) the dns server stops
resolving internet websites. Exchange does cannot deliver
external mail. No events are logged. A test on the dns mmc
returns passed on both tests. Ping does not work.
This is not the first time that i have this problem. The
only thing i can do is to restart the dns service.

Forwarders does not help.

In all 3 cases it were domain controllers with Exchange
2000 and terminal server (remote administrative mode).

Is there someone who can tel me what is going wrong?

Greetings,

Peter Vandenbon.

Well, DNS servers are not always configured with forwarders. It is not a
requirement.

Peter, is your DNS server dual-homed? When I've seen similar problem, it's
mostly either because of configuring DNS to listen on the wrong NIC, or
configuring the Default Gateway on the wrong NIC in TCP/IP properties.

Try and check those.

Greetings,

Peter Vandenbon.

First thought is your configuration needs to be cleaned up. If configured
correctly, this *just* works.

Peter, can we see an unedited ipconfig /all from your DNS server, your
domain controller and from your Exchange server please? We need some config
info on your setup and this is the best way to help us give us a start in
diagnosing this.

Thanks

I've seen this pretty consistently with Windows 2000 servers running SP2.
The servers will work fine for a few days, then stop resolving. Restarting
DNS always fixes the problem. I even resorted to putting a batch file on a
few machines that ran once a day. Only needed one line:

@net stop dns && net start dns

I have not had the problem at all since upgrading to SP3. So, if you aren't
running SP3, give that a shot first. If you are running SP3, maybe try
reinstalling it or even going to SP4.

Forwarders are not a requirement, but considered by most I know to be best
practices.

Forwarders don't help? What exactly does that mean - aren't the
servers configured with forwarders all the time? Perhaps you need to
try different public DNS servers....

I have found it myself. It should be resolved in SP 4. The
dns is working fine for 3 day!!!!

I have this problem as well, and I am on SP2. This only happens to me about
every 2 months, but it is annoying. Nothing in the event logs. All dns
servers and dns forwarders pass tests. It's almost like it is running off
the cache and not even trying to resolve. I will be upgrading our DNS
servers to SP3 this weekend and will post results if this thread is still
going.
